Lara receives multiple fellowships

History Ph.D. Candidate Genesis Lara has received multiple prestigious fellowships to help fund her dissertation research.

Her dissertation project, titled "Revolutionary Dominicanidad: The Dominican Republic and the Caribbean Radical Imaginary," examines the intricacies of revolution, state repression and memory in the Cold War Caribbean through the prism of the Dominican revolutionary period and its aftermath (1961-1980). The awards include:

Professor Ari Kelman wins the Guggenheim Fellowship!

From the Press Release on April 10, 2019: 2019 Fellows—United States and Canada On April 9, 2019, the Board of Trustees of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation approved the awarding of Guggenheim Fellowships to a diverse group of 168 scholars, artists, and writers. Appointed on the basis of prior achievement and exceptional promise, the successful candidates were chosen from a group of almost 3,000 applicants in the Foundation’s ninety-fifth competition.

 

Serpa-Flack Wins Fulbright Scholarship

The History Department congratulates doctoral candidate Ashley Serpa-Flack, who has received a Fulbright award for her dissertation research in Portugal during the next academic year.

Serpa-Flack, who is fluent in Portuguese, will be researching reactions to U.S. policies on decolonization in the 1960s and 1970s, under the guidance of Professor Kathy Olmsted. Ashley has also received numerous smaller grants supporting her research.

Fellowship established in memory of Brenda Medina-Hernandez

Friends of a recent UC Davis History PhD, Brenda Medina-Hernandez, created a GoFundMe campaign for a fellowship in her memory.

Please consider supporting the Brenda Medina-Hernandez College Fellowship. Brenda Medina-Hernandez was a recent History PhD at UC Davis who died tragically in July 2017. Her friends have launched this gofundme campaign to establish a fellowship to support California students with their college expenses.

Lorena Oropeza Wins Equity Prize

Associate Professor Lorena Oropeza was awarded the 2017 Equity Award from the American Historical Association for excellence in recruiting and retaining historians from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups.
