Louisa Brandt is a PhD student at the University of California, Davis studying the Civil War in California. Her Master’s thesis, “Joining Up with the Union: California’s Place in the Nation and the Meaning of Military Service in the Civil War,” examines how the Golden State’s 16,000 Union volunteers served as a crucial factor in helping define California’s relationship to the rest of the country. At the University of Oklahoma, she was an editorial fellow at the Western Historical Quarterly.
