Bio

Cole Manley, PhD candidate in History at UC Davis, studies the urban, social, and political history of California and the American West. He is particularly interested in the racial, class, and gender politics of San Francisco and Oakland from the 1860s through World War II, with emphasis on transit, urban planning, and real estate. His first book was The Unlikely World of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, on the global connections of the Montgomery Boycott of 1955-1956, published in 2021 with the University of Georgia Press (NewSouth Books). His articles have appeared in Western Historical Quarterly and the Journal of Urban History. 

Advised by Dr. Greg Downs, Manley completed his BA in History at Stanford University, and received his Master's in International and World History from a dual-degree program at Columbia University and the London School of Economics and Political Science. He is from San Francisco, originally, and lives in Sacramento, CA.
