Robert Darnton is Carl H. Pforzheimer university professor, emeritus, and university librarian, emeritus, at Harvard University. He has written authoritatively about a wide variety of topics, encompassing French cultural history; the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of East Germany; the underground book trade in prerevolutionary France; communication networks in 18th-century Paris; and "the digital public library of America," the topic for the talk he presented at UC Davis.
