This round table will feature two presentations by César Ayala (Professor, Sociology, UCLA) and José I. Fusté (Assistant Professor, Ethnic Studies, UCSD), followed by a brief commentary and an open Q&A.
Prof. Ayala's presentation, which relates to his soon-to-be-published book Agrarian Puerto Rico: Reconsidering Rural Economy and Society, 1899-1940, will examine the transformations of land tenure in the decades immediately following the U.S. occupation of Puerto Rico. Prof. Fusté, in turn, will touch on the experience of two Afro-Puerto Rican public intellectuals in early twentieth-century D.C. and New York, looking into their critical engagement with racial identities as they probed the limits of colonial subjecthood.
