HIS 158: Modern Migration History to Latin America

This course explores the migrations to, from, and within Latin America since the mid-19th century. Topics covered include the formation of favelas in Rio de Janeiro, the rise of labor unions and sports clubs in Buenos Aires, the resilience of Chinese immigrants in Mexico and Peru, the American intervention against German and Japanese immigrants during World War II, and the Central American emigration crisis to the United States. Weekly themes will emphasize culture, economics, and international affairs.
