What do you do as a Sample Prep Assistant?

My position as a Sample Prep Assistant entails logging samples into the lab system, organizing them, and preparing them to be tested. This can be anything from opening mail to scanning samples in to cutting hair samples into the sample plates to be tested. It involves way more science than I ever thought I would do (and it's not even that much), but it's been a fun learning process.

How did your UC Davis education prepare you for this work?

My time at UCD prepared me really well for this job, even though it is in a very different area than my majors. Most of the challenging things about it involve attention to detail, precision, and the ability to follow directions, which are all things I had to learn and apply to do well in my classes. I completed a History Honors Thesis, which really helped me learn how to be self-sufficient and problem solve on my own, which are certainly things I use at work (and I'm sure at any job I will have in the future). Another big part of my time as an undergrad was learning how to talk to and network with people, be it professors or fellow students. Being able to make appointments and meet with people, and then talk to them and make those connections is another really valuable skill set that can be used in the job search and beyond.
